Product of the week: Fancy labels

Yesterday I wrote about the wonders of labels, and how they can improve your life. Today, let’s look at one kind everyone seems to be crazy about: the chalkboard label. I was given these lovely Martha Stewart labels (Avery brand) at our latest Professional Organizers conference. (Thank you, kind sponsors!) It seems that it is possible to make them yourself, with vinyl (and a steady hand for cutting) or chalkboard paint. To me, that’s rather labour-intensive. However, the erasable feature seems handy, if I decide to put something else in the canister.

Here’s Martha’s ad:

And how they turned out for me:

labels, oxo containers

Pretty good. It is very hard to write as neatly as the person who created the ad- and I have a lot of experience writing semi-neatly with chalk. It may be easier with the chalk-markers that are now available. Once the label is on the canister, it’s an awkward writing surface. Round canisters would be even more difficult. And they do smear a bit; chalk is like that. However, it’s an easy way to identify what’s in the pantry, and much more attractive than a strip of masking tape.
